THE LABOUR candidate for the post of Essex Police and Fire Commissioner has responded to a press release from the Conservative Party about increased funding to policing in Essex.
Cllr Chris Vince said:
“Their press release fails unsurprisingly to point out that since 2010 the amount of funding cut from the County’s police force is in fact over £18 000 000. This has meant less police on our streets and in our communities for over a decade. If the Conservative Party recognise the importance of ‘bobbies on the beat’ why did they get rid of them in the first place.

In the last five years alone recorded crime in our county has gone up by a massive 51%. So although they may tell you that they are the party of law and order they are sadly anything but.
Our County’s police officers have for too long been underfunded, under resourced and over worked, with officers having their rest days cancelled at the last minute, and now, during this terrible pandemic, putting themselves at risk on a daily basis. How long did it take the govt to recognise the need for them to wear PPE?

Yes let’s get more police on the streets and in our communities, yes let’s give them the support to do their job and support their welfare but let’s not rewrite history.
“Sadly this announcement, which interestingly enough comes just before the PFCC elections, has come far too late!
