A JURY took just 30 minutes to find a man guilty of his role in a violent robbery near Harlow where a woman was followed home and attacked on her own driveway.
The victim, who is in her 60s, was attacked in Green Lane, Foster Street at around 6.45pm on Sunday 7 April.
A man, described as white and wearing dark-coloured clothing including a hooded top with the hood up, had left a blue BMW 1 series parked nearby before confronting the victim.
He grabbed her bag and dragged around 20 feet across the driveway before she let go and he made off on foot towards Harlow.
The victim sustained injuries to her back, foot and elbow including extensive bruising to her lower back.
The car, which was being driven by another person, also left the area.
Officers from Harlow CID were on patrol in the area at the time of the incident and saw the BMW parked near to the victim’s property and were able to get the registration plate and described the driver as being mixed race.
Through the investigation, officers were able to identify that the blue BMW had followed the victim’s vehicle home from her place of work the week before the attack.
In the week following the robbery, the vehicle was seen by officers on two separate occasions who spoke to the driver – a black man who gave his name as Leon Dennis.
On each occasion he provided a different mobile phone number and address.
Further investigations established that ‘Leon Dennis’ was actually 33 year-old Jermaine May and were able to place him in the area of the robbery at around the time it took place.
May, of no fixed address, was arrested when he attended Harlow Police Station on 27 April.
He was later charged with robbery.
Following a three day trial at Chelmsford Crown Court a jury today (Thursday 3 October) took just 30 minutes to reach a unanimous guilty verdict.
He is due to be sentenced at the same court on 14 November.
Detective Constable Ryan Burgess, from Harlow CID, said: “Jermaine May and his accomplice, specifically targeted the victim and planned a robbery
“May lied throughout the investigation and his trial, providing a false name and false addresses, as well as trying to sell the car used in the robbery.
“Fortunately the jury easily saw through these lies.
“I’d like to praise the bravery of the victim who is still suffering the psychological effects of the attack.
“I’d also like to thank all the members of public and officers who’ve supported this complex and fast moving investigation.”
