Robert Ellis

A football coach has been jailed for nine years for grooming and sexual activity with teenage boys.

Robert Ellis, 50, met one of the 15-year-old victims online in April 2015.

He invited him to football matches, claimed to have talent spotted goalkeepers and offered to coach the teenager, who was from Lincolnshire.

Ellis, a civil servant of Church End, Harlow, arranged to meet him in a park in July 2015 where they played football and later went for a meal.

The boy’s mother reported Ellis to local police after finding out and banned her son from contacting him again.

However they resumed contact in December 2015 and arranged to meet. This was reported to police and Ellis was arrested in January 2016, before the meeting could take place.

During the course of their enquiries, officers spoke to another young man, who said he had been in a sexual relationship with Ellis when he was 15 after they met online.

The victim told how they had twice engaged in sexual activity, once after Ellis had taken him to Chessington World of Adventures and the second time after he had taken him out for dinner.

During the police investigation, it was also found Ellis had been banned by the Football Association from taking part in any FA-football related activity involving under 18s, since December 2013. However, he continued to take part in informal football sessions in Harlow that were not covered by this ban.

Whilst on bail, Ellis met a 14-year-old boy and engaged in sexual touching with him.

He was further arrested and remanded.

Ellis denied one charge of meeting a boy aged under 16 following grooming, six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a boy aged under 15 and three counts of sexual touching. He stood trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, where he was found guilty of all charges on February 28.

He was sentenced today, Friday April 7, to nine years and made subject of a sexual harm prevention order and will be added to the sex offenders register for life.

Speaking after the hearing, investigating officer Detective Sergeant Clayton Ford, of Essex Police’s Online Investigation Team, said: “This is a worrying grooming case where Ellis used his love of football and the suggestion of gifts or trips to various places to try and get a teenage victim into a situation where he could carry out sexual acts with him.

“Thankfully the victim’s family were able to recognise the risk from the messages exchanged and report the situation to police.

“Where Ellis was able to get unsupervised access to the other teenagers in this case, he went on to commit serious sexual offences.

“This case highlights the dangers of manipulative individuals operating on the internet looking to identify and exploit vulnerability or a common interest that will give them the opportunity to meet children for their own sexual gratification.

“I am grateful to the victims, whose courage and assistance has been essential in Ellis’s prosecution and possibly preventing further victims coming to harm.

“I would urge all children, and their parents or guardians, to have a look at the www.thinkuknow.co.ukwebsite and to be vigilant about the motives of people they do not know who approach them online.”

An NSPCC spokesman said: “Ellis is a devious and manipulative sexual predator who used his position as a football coach to commit vile abuse against children.

“His sickening actions will have a long lasting effect on his victims and it’s important they receive all possible support to help rebuild their lives.

“We hope they can take some comfort from today’s sentence and the fact that Ellis’s campaign of abuse has finally come to an end.

“Increasingly, young people are being groomed by abusers on the internet, so parents and carers need to be vigilant about the relationships their child is forming on and offline.

“For help and support parents can call the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000.”

A man has been found guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court today, Friday, April 28, 2017, of causing two deaths and injuring two others in a road traffic collision. The case has been adjourned until Friday, June 2 for sentencing at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Roger Sharratt, 52, a lorry driver of Bagots Oak, Staffordshire, pleaded not guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving after his lorry was involved in a collision on May 15, 2014.

He was driving a Man rigid lorry and drawbar goods vehicle, northbound along the M11, when he collided with the back of a black Jaguar XF. This then collided with a silver Toyota Auris, pushing it under the back of a white Mercedes 1833 horsebox. The Toyota burst into flames and further collided with a white Vauxhall Combo van.

Both occupants of the Toyota, Geoffrey Mills, 53, and Eleanor Joy Mills, 45, were killed.

The two occupants of the Jaguar XF suffered concussion, cuts and bruises. One of the horses suffered serious injury and a pony travelling with them died.

The court heard that Sharratt was driving at 55mph using cruise control and failed to react to the slowing traffic as he was likely to have been asleep. He was sleep deprived having only slept for three to four hours the night before and was suffering from a sleep apnoea syndrome.

Senior Investigating Officer DI Scott Egerton said, “Although this has been a complex case involving medical experts, Mr Sharratt drove dangerously. He was in charge of a heavy good vehicle and fell asleep. His actions tragically caused the death of Geoffrey and Eleanor Mills. This case must serve as a warning to all drivers of the need to rest and take breaks when driving long distances. Mr Sharratt failed to do this and caused the most serious of crashes. Our thoughts go out to the Mills family.”

Basildon Magistrates Court

A pharmacy assistant who illegally sent medication to an addict who then died from “drugs toxicity” has been jailed reports BBC Cumbria

Cherie Madge, 42, was found guilty of posting drugs to her internet “soul mate” Shaun Bowmer in Penrith, Cumbria.

She continued over a period of months despite pleas from Mr Bowmer’s partner to stop. He died in February 2016.

Jailing her for four-and-a-half years at Carlisle Crown Court, Judge Peter Davies said Mr Bowmer “may be alive today” but for Madge.

The court heard the pair met in an online chat room “perhaps as along as 10 years ago”.

Though they spoke to each other over the internet and phone, they never physically met.

Jurors were told Madge sent Mr Bowmer patient-returned drugs she sourced from her place of work between August 2015 and February 2016.

High levels of tramadol and morphine were found in Mr Bowmer’s system after his death.

Madge admitted sending Mr Bowmer tramadol, but denied illegally supplying him with four other controlled drugs – morphine-based Class A Zomorph and Sevredol and Class C diazepam and lorazepam.

Jurors found her guilty of all offences.

Judge Davies said Mr Bowmer’s death was a “seriously aggravating feature” of Madge’s offending.

He told her: “It is not an exaggeration to say but for you, he may be alive today.”
